A list of suggested Hostels and Hotels in San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Due to the time that most international flights arrive and depart from Honduras and the limited flights available to Utila, most travelers destined for Utila will need to spend a night or two in San Pedro Sula on the way to or from the island.  San Pedro Sula can be a difficult city to navigate, so we’ve included below some tried, tested and true recommended places to stay.

Some considerations when staying in San Pedro Sula, Honduras:

1) Purified Water:  Don’t drink out of the tap or brush your teeth from tab water in Honduras.

2) Taxis: You will likely need to take a taxi from the airport or bus station to your hotel- do not plan on taking local buses as they are unsafe. If possible, book your hotel in advance and arrange for your hotel or hostel to send a driver to pick you up. From the airport to town  a taxi should cost about $15-20 usd total, not per person.  From the bus station to most hotels a taxi should cost about $5-8 for the first person, and just a little more for each additional person. Always agree on your price ahead of time.

3) Safety.  Be vigilant about your safety in San Pedro Sula. Yeah we know you’ve traveled all through Central America, maybe elsewhere,  but San Pedro Sula is not a town to go off exploring by yourself- safety is a serious issue here and the locals will tell you that too.  You will likely not have any issues at any of the hotels below, but be sure to take a taxi to any destination day OR night and save your exploring for other places in Honduras.

Hotels are listed below according to price:

Casa Del Arbol Hotels are first hotels in all Honduras to be certified in Sustainable Tourism and Environmentally positive practices by “Produccion mas Limpia”, ServiceBest and SmartVoyager. Owner Donaldo Suazo takes great pride in both his hotels and truly wants your experience to be a postive one.

The first Tree House Hotel (Casa Del Arbol Centro) was created with the idea of conserving and preserving an old family house which has been very nicely redone and converted into a boutique hotel. The owners kept the original design, this being a traditional wooden house typical of the banana companies in which they adapted 6 rooms and also built an annex building with 7 rooms, all fully equipped to meet the needs of their guests.

The hotel is located in the Barrio Guamilito Antañon in central San Pedro Sula, which is where the handicraft market is.  Very secure compound, and the front desk will call a cab for you to head out to dinner.

Excellent service and hands on owners with employees who really go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable.  Fluffy beds and continental breakfast make this a luxurious but affordable place to stay.

Good Option for Medium Priced: Metrotel Express (formerly Microtel)

A good clean, and safe option near the airport. This is a lot like an “American” style chain hotel.  Rates start at about $80 usd plus tax including breakfast and free local calls. There is a refreshing swimming pool on the premise.  The Metrotel Express is located close to the international airport so it is a great option for flights in and out of San Pedro Sula. However, it is a bit far (but not impossible), for going into town for dinner  (there is a restaurant on premise) and not ideal for getting to bus station.  Note:Even though its very close to the airport, some taxis will try and charge you the full rate to town, so negotiate and agree on price before hand and ask for assistance at the front desk.

Good Option for Medium Priced: Hotel Los Jicaros

Nice friendly service in this renovated home with clean and comfortable AC rooms. Rooms are clean and basic, with nice local art on the wall , but it is the friendliness and humbleness of the staff that make us want to send others their way. Located right around the corner from Crowne Plaza in the center of the city there is also a nice upscale restaurant across the street.  AC Rooms start at $60/$65 single/double, these prices do not include tax but do include continental breakfast. They give a discount for large groups and children under 12 stay for free

Clarion

A nice chain option in a beautiful building  and very comfortable. Service can be hit or miss though, as some of the front desk agents have been exceptionally freindly while others  desk agents appear not to be helpful or interested. The rooms are quite nice, and if you get a good crew, you’ll really enjoy it.  About $115 usd but sometimes great specials during the weekends as low as $90 usd.
