Coral House Inn at Punta Gorda, Belize - great spot to hang your hat when coming to / from Utila!

We get many tourists and expats to Utila coming from or to Belize.  I’ve done the trip a few times now while doing some kayaking up in Belize, and wrote up a little excerpt of getting to Belize from Utila and getting to Utila from Belize.

This latest trip coming back home to Utila from Belize, I had the oppportunity to stay at the Coral House Inn  Bed and Breakfast in Punta Gorda. And I do mean opportunity.

While there are a variety of more backpacker style spots that are a good deal, Darla and Rick, owners of Coral House Inn have really put their heart into making their spot a refuge in the rather “off the beaten path” tranquil community of Punta Gorda.

Fine linens and well furnished rooms await you at Coral House Inn, Belize

Coral House Inn is an intimate  inn with four air-conditioned rooms opening onto spacious verandas overlooking the spectacular Caribbean Sea.  There is a fantastic pool that is kept very clean, and a perfect little outdoor Tiki bar that works on the honor system.  A lovely breakfast is served.

The story of the Coral House Inn is really fantastic- The curent innkeepers, Mike and Darlenee,  found the abandonded home that was covered in ivy. They were entranced, as it looked like a “secret garden” of sorts. When they did some research, the found the building was originally started in 1938 and then a British Doctor purchased the home in the 50’s and finished it in contempory 50’s architecture style. Mike and Darlene made a bold move and purchased the abandoned property (after finding the owner) and did an extensive renovation. What that means is that it has a “retro” look today – while it has gone a full upgrade,  the innkeepers kept much of the orignal character- the arches, the very cool tile,  and more.  You get the 50’s charm but with full air-conditioning, cable, local artwork, fresh flowers, pool, and more.

The veranda and pool areas are just perfect for lazing around and catching up on that book or much needed rest if you’ve been on the move.  Whats more, they have a nice selections of beach cruisers (well maintained) that are perfect for going out and exploring the village of Punta Gorda.
