How Do The Hotels Differ?

As a general guideline (prices are estimates only):

-Budget private single rooms or a bed in a dorm room with shared cold water bathrooms start at about 8 USD per night, a little more for a double.

-Add a few dollars for hot water. Basic private rooms with fan and private bathrooms start at about $15 USD single/$20 USD double and may offer the use of Air Conditioning for a few dollars more.

-Nicer more comfortable rooms with private hot water shower will run from about $30 USD and up, and more upscale rooms will cost about $50 USD and up.

-Many of the dive shops offer discounted or even free rooms if you are paying for scuba dive courses with them. These are generally more basic accommodations or a bed in a dormitory style room, and while preference is given to those diving with the associated shop, they may have space for non-divers during the non-peak season.

Is There 24 Electric at All Hotels?

Utila has had 24 hour electricity since the late 1990s, though not all hotels will have a back-up generator for use during infrequent power outages.  Air Conditioning is usually an option at all but the most budget of places, but you will pay extra and will need to ask in advance.

Availability – Do I Need to Reserve in Advance?

You can generally find a spot to stay in Utila anytime excluding the busiest weeks of the year (Semana Santa-the week preceding Easter; SunJam-first weekend in August; Utila Carnival-usually in July; Christmas and New Year’s), and on weekends when there is a lot of visitors from the mainland. BUT, if you want to be sure you have the same room for your entire stay and/or want to stay at one of the more popular hotels, you should call or write ahead to reserve.

During holiday weeks (Christmas, New Years, Semana Santa-the week before Easter, and the first week of August with SunJam and the week of Utila Carnival) the island of Utila really does get completely full. During these weeks, we have seen more folks arriving on Utila than there is space for, so plan in advance!

How To Choose Your Hotel

Many travelers coming to Utila do so with scuba diving in mind and will take the ferry to Utila and go with a dive shop representative to their particular dive shop, and have a look around. If they want to see other options all dive shops will keep your bags for you while you shop around. Some of the lodging spots are a quick walk from the dock where the ferries land so you can also find a hotel for the first night and then look around some more the next day.

Contacting the Hotels in Utila

Some of the smaller hotels / hostels will either not have email addresses or do not check their in boxes regularly.  Keep in mind that most of the budget lodging options are local “mom and pop” type operations, so you will have better luck calling direct or just stopping in at arrival.
