Utila is known for being a low-key, casual island and in general, you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as Utila is definitely not a dressy place. Here are a few suggestions of what to put into your luggage:
Lightweight long pants and shirt; if there are bugs out, its usually at sunset, and a little protection really helps. Can also use for sun protection.
Light rain jacket
Sun hat– especially your first few days, or you will get burned!
Casual shoes for walking– Either a walking/running shoe or Tevas, Chacos, etc. Flip flops work well, but invest in a good pair so you don’t get a blow-out.
Shoes that can get wet– tevas/booties/thin water socks, etc.
Swimsuit/ trunks–
Light sweater or long sleeve for evenings– when the wind picks up can get a little chilly for some (the webmaster sleeps in wool hat in the winter, though most people probably think thats crazy!)
Wetsuit shorty if going to be in the water a lot and its not the summer months (though you can rent at dive shops).
Flashlight if you will be biking or walking at night
Mosquito repellent (which you can also buy here easily, but might want it when arrive)
Sunscreen (which you can buy here, but its a bit expensive)
Personal toiletries
Snorkeling gear – You can rent snorkeling equipment at the dive shops in town, but many visitors prefer to bring their own.
PASSPORT for travel! If you are coming from countries other than USA, please also to consult travel requirements (USA travelers just need a passport that is valid for at least six months from arrival date.)
UtilaGuide Tip #1: Assume your luggage will get lost en route. Really. If it doesn’t, it will just be an extra bonus, but if it does, you will have already planned ahead and packed your bathing suit in your carry-on.
UtilaGuide Tip #2: While roaming the streets, its best to wear a cover up of some sort, as opposed to prancing through town in your thong. Just a skirt or shorts for ladies please, and a tank or shirt, and that will go a long way as showing respect towards the locals, especially the older generation. Though swim trunks for guys and shirtless are generally okay on the street, if you are going into a local business or office (like the post office), again, just throw a shirt on as a sign of respect.
