Vehicles and Bicycle Rentals:

You don’t really need to have a motorized vehicle when you come to Utila as most places can be easily and quickly reached on foot and as a matter of fact, Utila traffic has become a bit of a problem in the last couple of years.
Once a quieter place with just a few vehicles to bring people and goods from the airport and a couple of delivery trucks to move freight around, the streets now tend to become congested and loud especially during the times of day that the ferries and fright boats call to port.
There has also been an increasing number of three wheeler taxis (‘tuk-tuks’), over the last few years which have added a convenient service to the island but have added to the street congestion. However, everything is a balance and the you can call a tuk tuk at pretty much any time of day or night to get to where you want to go (or to take you home after a late night out). This is an especially good option if you are staying at a vacation rental away from the centre of town. Find a driver you like, get their number and keep it close.
In addition to the tuk tuks there are plenty of bicycle and vehicle rental options for those who would like to have autonomy and use of their own vehicle to get around during their stay.
Some hotels and vacation rentals offer bicycles for their guests to use, some even have use of a scooter or a golf cart as an option so be sure to ask when you book.
Renting a motorized vehicle such as a scooter, four wheeler of a golf cart for a day or so to do a little exploring of the island, away from the main street is a fun activity and allow you to visit out of the way places you may not otherwise get to see.
Do I Need a Vehicle?
If you are staying in town, you will likely find that you won’t need a vehicle at all, but may want to rent a golf cart, scooter, or 4-wheeler for some exploring of the island. If you are renting one of the vacation rental homes on Utila, keep in mind that most are located slightly out of town (1 mile to 1.5 mile), so you will likely want some type of transport if you don’t plan on walking or using the tuk tuks.
Are there Taxi’s?
Yes! Many visitors choose to take advantage of the moto-taxis (tuk tuks), on island. These are modified scooters, with full back seats and covered. There are MANY on the island – you can’t miss them. In-town trips are generally 30 lempiras per person ($1.25 USD), including to the public beach. Trips from the airport are usually 100 lempiras pre person. There are plenty driving around so you shouldn’t have to wait long to flag one down.
UtilaGuide Tip: If you are staying at a rental house or outside of town, and plan to use a taxi later that night, make sure you have the name and number of a tuk tuk driver that you trust and find out if he or she is working that night.

Utila Guide Tip: If you are staying longer term, look into buying a new or used bicycle and selling it before you leave Utila. There are forums on Facebook for this kind of thing or just ask around!
Also: Don’t forget to ask at your hotel or rental if there are bicycles you can borrow during your stay.

Golf Carts, Scooters, ATV’s (‘Quads’):
During the busy seasons (Christmas/New Year, Easter, Carnival & SunJam (August), and National Holiday weekends), you will want to reserve in advance (all of the rental places have someone on staff whom can speak English if you want to call to reserve your vehicle). Most places require a deposit.
Golf Carts around the island rent for about $35-90 USD per day depending on whether it is an electric or gas model and if it seats 2,4 or 6 people), and scooters $25-50 USD per day. We have found that you may need to email a few times to ensure you have a reservation.
UtilaGuide Tip: If you do get a an electric scooter or golf cart and charge it a hotel or Vacation Rental unit, there may be a slight charge of $4-5 USD per night charging fee just to cover the cost of electricity. Be sure to ask in advance, or get a vehicle that runs on gas*
